Buying

Buying

When looking for a home there are several things to keep in mind.

Make a list of things that you need. Make another list of wants. Decide what you can and can’t live without. Be very realistic and honest with yourself. For example if you have three cars don’t buy a home with one parking spot.

  • Be realistic with your financing. Get pre-approved. This will help you understand exactly what you can afford. Keep your lifestyle in mind. Don’t put yourself in a position of being house poor.
  • Be prepared to make compromises. Keep the idea of renovations in mind.
  • Be cautious in unfamiliar areas and locations.
  • Keep an open mind. Don’t get locked into something like square footage. Sometimes layout is more important than size.
  • Look through the owners belongings to the bones of the home.
  • Be realistic with your expectations. If you want to live in a 100 year old brick character home, don’t expect large bedroom closets.
  • Do your research. In any transaction be willing to take the time to do the follow up that is needed. Home, sewer line, and fireplace inspections are great ways to ensure that you are buying what you think you are buying.
  • Pay attention to your instincts. If something seems too good to be true it may very well be.
  • Have fun. Enjoy the experience!
