Why Qu’Appelle?

Qu’Appelle has a rich and colorful history in Saskatchewan. Originally named Troy, a Hudson Bay trading post was situated southwest of the current town from 1854 to 1864. In 1885 Qu’Appelle was the debarkation and distribution site during the Saskatchewan (Second Riel) Rebellion. General Middleton used the Qu’Appelle Queens Hotel as a marshalling point. In the late 1800’s the Qu’Appelle district was home to the first steam plow in Western Canada. In the early part of the 20th century the train stopped daily so Qu’Appelle was a hub of both travel and freight. By the second half of the 20th Century passenger train travel was declining as individual vehicles were becoming more common.

Today Qu’Appelle has a made its mark as a commuter town. Now, between 70 and 80 percent of the population commutes to work every day. Qu’Appelle is a bedroom community with a difference.
